Whiskey Shots: Virginia Distillery Company Blue Ridge American Single Malt Whisky

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Virginia, the Virginia Distillery Company stands as a testament to innovative spirit and craftsmanship in the world of American whiskey. The distillery's story began with the late Dr. George G. Moore, a native Irishman who relocated to the U.S. in the 1970s. After a successful business career, Dr. Moore combined his passion for single malt whisky with his love for his adopted home state, establishing a distillery that pays homage to both his Irish roots and Virginia's rich heritage. Unfortunately, he passed away while it was being built; from there, his wife (Angela) and their son Gareth (and now also his wife Maggie) continued on and expanded upon their father’s vision.

With a focus on creating exceptional American single malts, Virginia Distillery Company has quickly gained recognition for its commitment to quality, traditional distilling methods, and the use of locally sourced ingredients. The result is a collection of whiskys that not only embody the spirit of Virginia but also reflect the artistry and legacy of a true pioneer in the industry.

Lately, I’ve been trying a lot of American Single Malt Whiskeys (ASMs). Recently, I’ve found one that encapsulates both warmth and character: Virginia Distillery Company Blue Ridge ASM. This whisky is both approachable and complex.

Appearance

I love how this whisky pours a beautiful golden straw that catches the light just right. Those fast thin legs trickle down the glass, hinting at a certain richness.

Nose

This is where things get really exciting! I can’t help but imagine cracking open a box of Apple Jacks—the delightful cinnamon sweetness fills the air and invites me to take a deeper whiff. And there’s more! A hint of peach dances in, along with a subtle note of vanilla that adds a touch of creamy sophistication. This inviting aroma sets the stage for what’s to come.

Palate

Taking my first sip, those cinnamon apple flavors truly shine. They burst with a lively sweetness that’s impossible to ignore. Soon after, I’m wrapped up in a wave of buttered toast, which brings a cozy, homey touch that feels like a warm hug. A hint of vanilla mingles with a soft kick of black pepper, giving my palate a delightful surprise that keeps me engaged.

Finish

As for the finish, I find it to be medium to long, allowing those flavors to linger just enough. The dry oak notes settle in, accompanied by a lasting heat from the black pepper that beautifully reminds me of the whiskey’s pleasant complexity.
